This gate was built in 1908 as the main gate of Kagoshima prison.
Kagoshima prison was relocated in 1986, and the main building and other buildings were dismantled, but only this main gate was left.
A sports facility "Kagoshima Arena" was built on the site of the prison, and the main gate has been remained on the site
