Kashveti Church of St. George (Tbilisi)

Kashveti Church is located diagonally across from the Parliament of Georgia. It is also known as St. George's Church.
The first church on this site is believed to have been built around the 6th century. A church built in the 18th century stood where the current church is now, but it was rebuilt due to deterioration. That is the present-day church. Construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1910.
In the 1920s, the Soviet government pushed to close churches, and this one nearly faced destruction. However, it was spared demolition due to appeals from the craftsmen involved in its construction and their friends.
During the “April 9 Tragedy” (Tbilisi Massacre) that occurred in front of the Georgian Government House (later the Parliament Building) on April 9, 1989, the surrounding park and this church served as shelters.
