The Vikings migrated to Iceland in the 9th century, and this was the beginning of the Icelandic nation. Fleeing oppression by Norway, they established a parliament, the Althing, in 930. This is said to be the oldest democratic parliament in the world.
However, after the 13th century, it came under the control of Norway and Denmark, and the Althing virtually ceased to function.
In the mid-19th century, the desire for independence increased and the Althing revived.
This parliament building was completed in 1881. It was built by stonemasons who shaped and stacked local volcanic rocks. The building is still called the Althing today.
At one time, the building housed the National Library and the National Art Gallery. The University of Iceland also occupied the first floor from 1911 to 1940.
