This building is the main gate of the Nara Prison.
The Nara prison was built in 1908. It's name was changed to Nara Juvenile Prison in 1946.
The prison was closed in March of 2017. In the same year, it was designated as an important cultural property. The buildings are planned to be used as a hotel and a museum.
