Former the main building of the Fifth Higher Middle School (Kumamoto City)
This building was built as the main building of Fifth Higher Middle School. It was renamed to Fifith High School in 1894.
The school was reorganized as Kumamoto University in 1949.
In 1969, the former Fifth High School main building, the Chemical Laboratory, and the main gate were designated as National Important Cultural Properties.
It has been open to the public since 1993 as the "Goko Memorial Museum".
