The Church of Agios Demetrios is an early Christian building in Thessaloniki. The original church was built in the 5th century. It was rebuilt after a fire in the 7th century, and was used until the early 20th century.
But the church was burned down in the Great Thessaloniki Fire of 1917.
The current building was rebuilt from 1926 to 1948, using as much original building material as possible.
It is part of the site "Palaeochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki" on the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO since 1988.
