Gakushi Kaikan (Chiyoda Ward)

The ‘Gakushikai’ was an organisation created for the exchange of graduates of the Imperial Universities. The four-storey main building was built in 1928 as its hall. It was designed by Teitaro Takahashi under Toshikata Sano.
In 1937, a new building designed by Akira Fujimura was added.
The building was used by the General Headquarters of the Allied Forces from 1945, before being returned to Japan in 1956.
Then the building had been used for accommodation, restaurants, conference rooms, wedding halls, etc., not only by members but also by the general public.
Due to the age of the building, it was closed in 2024 and redevelopment work will begin.
The new building will be demolished and the main building will be moved on site to undergo seismic renovation work. The work will be completed around 2030.
