Former Marunouchi Building (former location : Chiyoda Ward)

The Marunouchi Building was an office building constructed by Mitsubishi Limited Partnership in front of Tokyo Station. It was designed by Kotaro Sakurai of the Estate Department of Mitsubishi Limited Partnership and completed in February 1923.
However, it was damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake in September of the same year, and restoration and reinforcement work was carried out over the next year.
It was an example of Japan's pioneering the use of the lower floors of office buildings as shopping malls and other facilities open to the general public.
Later, the second basement floor was added and the exterior walls were repaired twice, but in 1995, Mitsubishi Estate announced that it would replace the building with a new one.
In 1997, the Architectural Institute of Japan submitted a request for preservation of the building, but it was closed that same year and demolished in 1999.
