Santa Maria Church (Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur)

This Catholic church was built during the Spanish colonial period. Its official name is Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Church of Our Lady of the Assumption).
The construction of the present church began in 1765 and was completed in 1769. The bell tower was built in 1810 (the bell was installed in 1811).
The church is built on top of a hill like a fortress and is surrounded by a wall. The thick buttresses and the belfry, which was built separately from the church, were probably built in preparation for earthquakes.
The bridge-like structure on the left in front of the church is a walkway connecting the church and the monastery (not on the card) in front of it.
The church was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993 together with three other churches.
