Salzspeicher [Salt Storehouses]  (Lübeck)

These buildings were built as warehouses to store salt transported from Lüneburg (a city about 80 km south of Lübeck). The oldest one was built in 1579 and the newest one in 1745. The salt was used to barrel herring or exported as a commodity.
Later it was used to store other goods such as cloth, grain and wood.
