Ávila Cathedral (Ávila)

The city of Ávila, west of Madrid, features city walls whose construction began around the late 11th century (or the 12th century). The walled area and the churches surrounding the walls were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 under the name “Old Town of Ávila with its Extra-Muros Churches.”
Ávila Cathedral adjoins the eastern side of the walls, serving functions for both the church and the fortifications.
Construction of the church is said to have begun in the 12th century, though other theories exist. Work progressed over more than 300 years, reaching substantial completion by the 15th century, though renovations continued thereafter.
The original plan called for twin towers on either side, but the tower on the right side facing the entrance was never completed. Consequently, the façade appears asymmetrical when viewed from the front.
