Pop-Up Card Improvements
My next update will feature pop-up cards of buildings in Shiga Prefecture, which I’m currently working on.
I finished one new card, but looking back at my site made me want to revise the cards I made earlier.
My progress on the new card stalled, and I’m now focusing on improving the older ones.

When I improve a card, my main website replaces the old work with the new one. So, I plan to post photos of both the before and after improvements on my blog as a record.
The three cards featured this time were all originally created in 2005.
I’d like to think I’ve improved over the past 20 years, but will the growth be noticeable…?
[1st card]
The top photo I posted is a pop-up card of the former Nagahama Station.
For this card, I used a separate piece to create the slanted roof section. Back then, I was focused on exploring what could be done with a single sheet of paper, so I cut the roof out from the blank ground area.

Recently, I’ve switched to different paper because I no longer find the cutout marks aesthetically pleasing.

The mechanism for folding the slanted roof itself remains unchanged.
I revisited the details, adjusting the window shapes and the orientation of the chimneys. Only upon reviewing the building photos this time did I notice that the two chimneys aren’t standing side by side at the same angle. One is rotated 45 degrees.
[2nd card]
The Auditorium of former Hikone Commercial College.

Checking the Exif data of the old photo, it showed the camera used was a RICOH Caplio GX.
Looking at the manufacturer’s site, it was a compact digital camera released in 2004 with 5.13 megapixels.
Looking at the entrance section, I thought I’d folded it neatly, but it didn’t fold properly. This is because the step is small and it’s only supported at two points, top and bottom.

So, I connected the entrance section to the wall at the bottom like this and raised the height on both sides of the stairs. For areas with narrow fold line spacing, like the stairs and the edge above the entrance, I made dotted-line cuts on the fold lines to make folding easier.

I also changed the cutting method for the ventilation opening (is that correct?) at the top front.
[3rd card]
Shiga Prefectural Government Building

The points I wanted to fix from the previous card were the central section, its left and right sides, and the wings at both ends, which were separate and not connected. While it could still be folded as is, connecting them would make the movement smoother, so I connected several points.

I also adjusted the vertical-to-horizontal ratio of the windows and made minor changes to other details.
These are the three cards I revised this time.
I plan to update the Shiga Prefecture pop-up card page soon, adding these new revisions along with some newly created cards.
