De Javasche Bank was one of the banks opened by the Dutch in the colony. The Padang branch was opened in 1864.
Then in the 20th century, this pop-up card building was newly built as the branch office. Construction began in 1921 and was completed in 1925.
After World War II, when Indonesia became independent, the bank was handed over to the Indonesian government and Bank Indonesia took over the management of the bank.
It was used as a branch office until 1977, when a new office was built and the branch was relocated. The old building has been used for internal operations of the bank instead of for public use.
In 1998, the building was designated as one of Padang's cultural heritage sites; and in 2024, it was opened to the public as a museum.
