Colonia del Sacramento is a city on the La Plata River. Built by Portugal in 1680. This church was founded in the same year, but has been rebuilt several times since then.
The current building was built in 1810. It was damaged by a lightning strike in 1823 and was restored from 1836 to 1941. In recent years, the restoration work was carried out in 1976.
In 1995, the "Historic Quarter of the City of Colonia del Sacramento" was registered as a World Heritage Site.
