Gakushi Kaiken

I visited to see the exterior of Gakushi Kaikan, which is scheduled to begin demolition this year.
A temporary enclosure for the construction was set up in April. Demolition of the new building is scheduled to begin around July.

Walking from the Imperial Palace side and looking from the corner of the intersection, the new building is only visible at the tower and not at all at the rest of the building. It must have been designed that way.

Wall surface of the old building. The slightly different color in some parts is probably where the tiles have been repaired.
The entrance part is not visible because of the temporary enclosure.
The old building is planned to move by towing for preservation.

The building with the arrow next to Gakushikaikan is the SC Kanda Nishikicho 3-chome Building, which has been under demolition since last year. This building was built in 1979 and was called the “Togin Kurita Building” when it was completed.

The redevelopment of Gakushi Kaikan was difficult to undertake alone due to the Hakusan-dori Avenue expansion project, so it was decided to jointly redevelop the adjacent land as well.

The light blue dotted line is the line where the road is to be widened, and the ward road to the east of Gakushi Kaikan has already been discontinued.
The old Gakushi Kaikan building is scheduled to be towed 7 meters to the east.

South side of the old building. The road sign prohibiting entry remains, but the road was discontinued in February 2024.

This is the new building to be demolished.
The entrance can be seen a little below, but given its location, it was probably built at the same time as the new building was constructed. If so, this entrance will probably be demolished as well.

Tiles seem to be peeling off in the upper left corner.

The north side of the new building.

This is the back side (east side) of the new building, and the old building can be seen in the back.
Is it piping for air-conditioning or something? It looks like a factory. I was surprised to see the difference from the front side.

The new building from Hakusan-dori.

The Gakushi Kaikan is scheduled to reopen for business around 2030 after demolition of the new building, towing and preservation of the old building, and construction of a new building.

In addition, Gakushi Kaikan has created a digital archive in an effort to preserve the old and new buildings before demolition.
It was opened to the public in April 2025 and is currently available for viewing.

By the way, the pop-up card’s pattern of the Gakushi Kaikan is now available for download, if you would like to take a look.
