Pop-up card “Former Sapporo Police Station”
From August 24th to 26th, this site was accessed nearly twice as much as usual. It seems that “Origami Kenchiku (Origamic architecture)" has attracted a little attention on SNS in Japan, and more people have searched for it.
I noticed it because the number of password requests increased. However, the access quickly returned to the original level. It can’t be helped because I don’t update my site in August.
So I made a pop-up card after a long absence, so please have a look.
The model is the former Sapporo Police Station.
While checking the architecture of Hokkaido, I saw some blogs saying “The central police station was restored", “Dismantled and restored", and “Reproduced the previous design". At that time, I didn’t know the previous building yet, so I thought, “Is it a reproduction architecture with exactly the same design?"
However, looking at the photo of the old police station building, the shape is different. I thought it was a reproduction building, but it was my misunderstanding (no, it’s strange to write " dismantling and restoration", isn’t it?), and it was actually a “new police station building designed with the image of the old building."
The “Sapporo City Photo Album" (published by Sapporo City in 1936) can be seen in the National Diet Library Digital Collections , and the building of the Sapporo Police Station is listed in it.
The notation of the Sapporo City Photo Album is written as “Sapporo Police Station", but the article about the current building uses the word “Central Police Station", so I checked why it was so.
This building was built in 1934. At that time, it was the “Sapporo Police Station". In 1949, the Sapporo City Police Station was established, and it became a two-station system consisting of the Sapporo City Central Police Station and the Sapporo City North Police Station. Here, “center" came to be attached to the name. From 1954, the official name was “Sapporo Central Police Station in the direction of Sapporo, Hokkaido". When Sapporo became an ordinance-designated city in 1976, it was renamed to “Hokkaido Sapporo Area Central Police Station".
The old police station building was dismantled in 1996, and in 1998, a new building was built that made use of the image of the old building.
Personally, I think the round windows lined up in a row not match the image of the old building.
While thinking about such a thing, I decided to make a pop-up card for the old police station building.
Since it was the central police station at the time of dismantling, there are many cases where the old government building is written as “former central police station". I basically give priority to the name at the time of completion, so I will write it as “former Sapporo Police Station".
I thought it would be better to cut the windows fine to give the atmosphere of an actual building, but it may have been a little too fine.
What I wanted to make the most this time was the round eaves at the entrance.
If I just want to put out the eaves, I can put it out without using a separate part, but the thick pillar at the entrance is one of the features of this building , so I definitely want to make that pillar as well.
So I decided to attach the eaves as a separate part.
The card before pasting the part looks like this. I pasted a crescent-shaped eaves here.
Looking at the card by lighting from the back, we can see the glue margin that was glued by inserting the eaves upper the circular window.
It was good that thanks to the pillars at the entrance, opening and closing movement was smoother than I expected.
I’m thinking of some other buildings to model, so I’ll update the main site after making other cards.
