Pop-up cards: Buildings in Kitami City

2025-01-03

I updated the pop-up cards of buildings in East Hokkaido.
I saw some old buildings in Notsukeushi in the last article, so I chose one of them to create this pop-up card.
It is the Former Notsukeushi Transportation and Track Maintenance Office.

It was 1918 when the Railway Board opened the Transportation and Track Maintenance Office in Notsukeushi.
This building was built two years later in 1920.
In the same year, the Railway Board was elevated to the Ministry of Railways.
After the World War II, the building was used as the Kitami General Office of Japan National Railways, and was demolished in 1983.

The card was made based on old photos, but the building might have been renovated and its shape seems to have changed slightly.
In this card, there are two chimneys and four dormers on the roof, but in the photo published in a book in 1938, the chimneys were missing.
And in the photo in the book published in 1979, the two inside dormers were missing.

Now, I was thinking of choosing a model for the other cards from the buildings listed in the previous article, but since the Kitami City Office, built in 1955 after the World War II, has already been lost, I decided to make that one.

Notsukeushi Town became Kitami City in 1942, and the Notsukeushi Town Office continued to be used as Kitami City Office at that time.
Therefore, the city office in the card above is the second generation of the city office.
The fire watchtower was erected next to the city hall because the fire station was attached to the city office.
The fire watchtower was demolished in 2002 and the city office building in 2011.

The last card is the former Tanno Chuoh Agricultural Association warehouse.

The Tanno area was originally part of Notsukeushi, but was split off and became an independent village in 1921 as Tanno Village.
It was merged in 2006 and is now Kitami City.
The model for the card is warehouses that still stand in front of Tanno Station.

According to the Kitami City website, these warehouses were built in 1932. But on the wall of the warehouse on the right side of the card, “Tanno Chuoh Agricultural Association” is written, and on the left side, “Tanno Village Agricultural Association”.
The Tanno Village Agricultural Association was established in 1934, so the warehouse on the left must have been built a little later.

The area around the warehouses is now maintained as Tanno Ishikura Park, and the warehouse on the right is used as a community event hall.

In this issue, I have released a pattern for a pop-up card for this warehouse.
Please use it if you like. (the download is here)
