The Great Wave off Kanagawa

Here is the opposite side of the Bank of Japan’s head office. This is the entrance to the Bank of Japan Annex Building.
Inside the building is the Currency Museum, which exhibits the history of money. In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibition is held, and the current exhibition is titled “New Bank of Japan Notes 2024. (from November 2, 2023 to September 8, 2024).

Since I visited in May, the new banknotes had not yet been issued, but they were issued in July. I have only seen the new banknotes in this museum and have yet to see them in real life. Well, I don’t spend much money.

I heard that Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa" was adopted for the new 1,000-yen bill so I decided to make a pop-up card.

Since it is a card of waves, I thought it could be used for a hot summer greeting card, but I was surprised when I looked back at my website. The last time I updated the greeting card was in October 2023.
That’s a complete state of neglect.

Reflecting on the situation, I made the card.

The overlapping waves were created in three stages, and maybe I was able to create the right atmosphere.
However, I omitted the boats from the original picture because I thought it would be difficult to fold it.

Mt. Fuji in the central distant view as in the original prints.

I wondered if anyone would want to cut it. I was worried about that,  but since I had been slacking on updating the greeting cards, I would have to release a new pattern soon.

So, I published the pattern.
