Pop-up card – World Heritage Sites in Colombia

2022-10-17

It’s been a while since I updated the pop-up cards of cultural properties in the world.
This time, I made two pop-up cards from the World Heritage Sites in Colombia.

The “Historic Centre of Santa Cruz de Mompoz" is one of the world heritage sites in Colombia. The city was built in the 16th century during the Spanish colonial period, and the streets from that time still remain.

The city was built along the river and prospered as a base for water transportation, but in the 19th century, the flow of the river changed and the center of development was shifted to another town. That’s why the old streets are remained there.

The photo above is the church of Santa Barbara, built in 1613, which is said to be one of the most famous churches in Mompoz. We can see many images of it on the Internet. The pattern of this card is downloadable.

The second photo is of the Church of San Francisco. The church was founded in 1564, but the current building was built in the 18th century. (The tower was built in the 19th century.)

There are several other churches, many of which seem to have been founded in the 16th or 17th century, but I don’t know if the buildings are still the same or renovation has been done since then.

I found some of the information about San Francisco Church in a book called “The Rough Guide to Colombia" on the Internet, but I’m not sure if it was fully researched.

I also borrowed a Japanese book from the library, but…

The book on the left had only four lines about Mompoz, and the book on the right had no mention of it… I could hardly gather any information.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ travel information (as of December 21), the entire country of Colombia is classified as either Level 1 (“Please exercise extreme caution"), Level 2 (“Do not travel unnecessarily"), or Level 3 (“Do not travel (travel advisory)").

By the way, Monpos falls under “Level 2".
There are four levels of travel advisories, but Level 4 was not issued for Colombia. Level 4 is “Evacuate. Do not travel (evacuation advisory)".

I wrote this text also by referring to the blogs of a person who had worked in Mompoz as JOCV members. When I read the stories of people working in the area, I realized that each country has its own way of life, and that we should not talk only about the safety aspects of travel information.

This time, my health was not good, and I made a design mistake when creating the card, so things did not go as smoothly as I had hoped. However, I’m relieved to have managed to publish it. Please enjoy the pattern if you like.
