Buildings lost in the earthquake (Fukushima Prefecture)

2017-11-04

Last week marked six full years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
I made the pop-up cards modeled after buildings that were damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake and have been demolished.
These two cards are buildings in Fukushima Prefecture.

This photo shows the former Nakano Tobacco Wholesale Store in Iwaki City. At the time of the earthquake, it was the store of Nakano Clothing Store. The building was damaged by the earthquake and was demolished.

The second photo is the former Yotsukura Bank, which was also located in Iwaki City. Yotsukura Bank was dissolved in 1934, but the building has been used as a hospital or a tutoring school since then. The owner of the building decided to preserve the building and keep it. Then it was registered as a tangible cultural property in 2007.
However, the building was determined to be totally destroyed in an earthquake damage survey, so it was dismantled.

This time, the pattern of the former Nakano Tobacco Wholesale Store is open to the public.

According to data from the Reconstruction Agency, there are approximately 123,000 evacuees nationwide (as of February). I hope that the day when we can truly say that we have recovered will come soon.
