Searching for Buildings Lost in Toyama Air Raid (1)

2022-05-25

There is a postscript at the end. (2022/05/25)

In the previous article, I mentioned the Toyama Air Raid, so I looked into the buildings lost in the air raid. (This is also preliminary research for my future card making.)
I searched for them from the materials available in the Digital Collections of the National Diet Library.

(1) Toyama Post Office, completed in 1901.

(2) Toyama Station: completed in 1908.

(3) Toyama Prefectural Assembly Hall : completed in 1909.
It was constructed as a commemorative project for the visit of the Crown Prince Yoshihito (the future Emperor Taisho). The building was used as a lodging for the Crown Prince’s visit to Toyama in the same year.

(4) Prefectural Vocational School of Pharmacy
The predecessor of the college was Kyoritsu Pharmacy School established in 1894. It became a prefectural pharmacy school in 1907, and became a vocational school of pharmacy in 1910.

(5) Toyama Jisai-in Nursing Home : completed in November, 1912. The previous building was destroyed by fire in 1911, so it was newly built. I do not know much about it because I have not seen it yet except for the description in the Toyama City History.

[Postscript] (2022.05.25)
I continued to check the records of Toyama Jisai-in Nursing House.  And I found an entry in the “History of Toyama City" published in 1936 that the main building and most of the men’s and women’s dormitories were destroyed by fire in 1916. Since the photo above is from a book published in 1914, it would be a mistake to treat this photo as a “building destroyed by Toyama Air Raid.
What was destroyed in the Toyama Air Raid was a building that was rebuilt after the fire in 1916.
