Third Year of Flood Damage – Naganuma, Nagano City (1)

Three years have passed since the flood damage caused by the East Japan Typhoon in 2019.
One year after the flood, I visited Myosho-ji Temple in the Naganuma area of Nagano City to see a photo exhibition of the flood damage.
At that time, I walked around the area and saw that there were still large traces of the flood damage.
The Naganuma Gymnasium was also flooded and looked like this.

Recently, I heard on the news that the Naganuma Gymnasium had been restored, so I visited again in October of this year.

The Naganuma Gymnasium had been restored. When I visited, local people were preparing for an event inside the gymnasium.

The front of the gymnasium. It was restored in August of this year.

Reconstruction of this area seems to be progressing gradually.
I only heard about this on the news, but Naganuma Shrine held an autumn festival on October 9 for the first time in four years, and a lion dance was dedicated to the shrine.

Two years ago, the Naganuma fire brigade room was located on the east side of the gymnasium.

The building was removed and the fire squad garage was set up in front of the gymnasium. Although not visible in this photo, there is a flood prevention warehouse behind the garage.
However, I looked at the street view before the flood, there were several steel warehouses in this location in front of the gymnasium, in addition to the Nagano City Flood Prevention Warehouse. Perhaps the warehouses were washed away by the flood, so they were rebuilt in their original locations and garages were added.

On the south side of the gymnasium, the Prefectural Archaeological Cultural Properties Center was conducting an excavation survey. They are currently excavating the ruins of Naganuma Castle. It is said that a river disaster prevention station will be constructed at the excavation site.

I went up to the embankment to the east of the gymnasium. On the north side, there was construction work going on.

I walked a little north and went down to the precincts of Myosho-ji Temple.
This is a photo taken two years ago.

Now, the walls have been repaired nicely. (I did not go inside the temple this time.)

Walking back toward the gymnasium again. Two years ago, the closed Naganuma Branch Office building was located diagonally in front of the gymnasium.

This year’s photo was taken from the same direction as the photo above.

The building had been completely demolished. A new government building may be constructed here.

City operations are still being conducted in the temporary government building.

The “Let’s all do our best!  Naganuma" sign that used to be there has been moved to the west side of the temporary government building. The prefab building in the back is labeled “Resident Interchange House. A news search revealed that it was installed in June of last year, and that it will be used to disseminate information on the Chikuma-gawa River construction project and as a place for residents to interchange with each other.
According to the schedule, it will be open until May 2023.

The right side is the temporary government building.

I walked around the area a little more.
