Pop-up card of the National Diet Building (ver. 1.2)

2020-07-06

I made a pop-up card.
It is an improved version of a past work, the National Diet Building.

The first time I made a card of the National Diet Building was in 2004. That was almost 16 years ago. I made it with Apple Works. The file is still there, but I can’t open it.
The pattern was adjusted once in 2010, but I don’t think I made any major changes, except for re-creating it in Illustrator.

I’m embarrassed to say that I’m also posting a photo of the old card for comparison.
“Embarrassed ?"  The card had been on my site for more than 15 years, so now what am I saying?

When I looked for the past photo data, only the data from 2004 remained. When I looked at the Exif data of the images, I found SONY’s DSC-P10.
Here it is, from SONY’s website (written in Japanese) .
It is 5.1 megapixels. I don’t have the camera with me anymore, but I used to use it in the past. I feel really nostalgic. I think it would be better to write down the sales period of discontinued products like this, so that the history of the manufacturer can be seen.

Here is the pop-up card I modified this time.
As I always do, this was taken with the lighting from the back, before attaching the backing paper.

Center part. When I enlarge the image, the roughness stands out, so I will not enlarge it any further.

I had a chance to visit the National Diet last year, so I also took photos of the actual building. This was taken after the tour and just before I left the gate.

The rest of the photos are also from last year’s tour.

We were not allowed to take pictures inside the main building, but we were able to take pictures of the visit lobby where visitors wait before being guided around. There are panels, models, and other exhibits there.

Prize-winning designs of the National Diet Building design contest.
Before the National Diet Building was constructed, the public was invited to submit designs for the building. 118 submissions were received, and the four designs shown in the photo were selected as the winners. The actual basic design was created by the Diet Building Construction Bureau of the Ministry of Finance, using these winning designs as reference.

This is a photo taken at the topping-out ceremony of the Diet Building, which took place on April 7, 1927. The construction of the Diet began in 1920 and was completed in 1936, so it took 17 years to complete.

There was also photos of the temporary Diet building. The Diet was a “temporary" building for 46 years from the time it was established until the current Diet was completed.
Above is the first temporary Diet building, from November 1890 to January 1891. It was destroyed by fire.
Below is the Second Diet building, from October 1891 to September 1925. This building was also destroyed by fire.

The third temporary Diet building was from December 1925 to November 1936. After this time, the current Diet building has been used.

There were several models on display, among which the model for the visually impaired is shown here. After seeing this model, I couldn’t help but fix my pop-up card. The old card looks totally different from this model.

Before I made the new pop-up card, I thought I would publish the pattern. However, when I tried to fold it myself, I found that it was difficult to fold and wrinkled easily. I decided that it was not suitable for download, so I will only show photos of it.

I will update the main site as soon as I have made another card that I can show to the public.

(2020.07.06) I also replaced the photos on the main site.
